Why grow your own units?

Growing your own carbon units is the process of developing a Woodland Carbon Code project on your company’s land and using the units against the company’s emissions.

It can be a cost-effective way to compensate for unavoidable emissions from your landholding or business, reducing the need to buy carbon credits.

Having your project validated and verified to the code provides accurate and transparent information about the benefits it delivers.

How to grow your own units

You can grow your own units by following each step of the Woodland Carbon Code process. Once your units are verified, you can retire them against your emissions in the UK Land Carbon Registry.

Carbon units can only be used once. If you use them against your emissions, you can’t sell them. However, it’s possible to use some of your units and sell others.

If you use verified units against your emissions, you need to retire them from the registry in your name. If you sell some units, they should be assigned or transferred to the buyer.
