UK voluntary carbon market prices continue to rise
Ecosystem Marketplace has released updated carbon credit pricing data for the UK’s voluntary carbon market, focusing on Woodland Carbon Code and Peatland Code projects.
The data, covering transactions from 2020 to 2024, aims to increase transparency in domestic carbon trading.
Collated in collaboration with Scottish Forestry and the IUCN Peatland Programme, the information shows that Woodland Carbon Code unit prices more than doubled over five years - from an average of £11.02 in 2020 to £26.85 in 2024. It also revealed that broadleaved woodlands attracted a slightly higher price than conifer woodlands in 2024.
There was a large increase in the amount of pricing data reported for Peatland Code projects, which showed that Peatland Code units sold for an average price of £25.04 in 2024.
Ecosystem Marketplace gathers the data from project developers and resellers through its Global Carbon Markets Hub. Up to April 2025, it had recorded transactions corresponding to 1.34 million tonnes of carbon dioxide removed by Woodland Carbon Code projects and 216,000 tonnes prevented from entering the atmosphere by Peatland Code projects.
Welcoming the findings, Dr Vicky West, Senior Development Manager for the Woodland Carbon Code, said:
“The UK voluntary carbon market plays a vital role in empowering landowners, organisations and businesses to address climate change through woodland creation and peatland restoration projects. Providing reliable pricing data from these projects is essential for building transparency and trust in the market.
“We’re grateful to all the project developers and retail aggregators who shared their data and we encourage others to support this important work by contributing as well.”
Market participants can report their pricing data anonymously through Ecosystem Marketplace’s Global Carbon Markets Hub. Contact Ecosystem Marketplace to find out more.
